Not all jadeite is created equal. Although every natural piece has its own character, three key qualities are commonly used to assess its beauty and value: colour, translucency and texture. The Gemological Institute of America similarly identifies colour, transparency and texture as the three most important quality factors for jadeite.

Understanding how these qualities interact can help you appreciate jadeite beyond its colour alone and choose a piece that genuinely appeals to you.

1. Colour

Colour is often the first feature people notice when looking at jadeite. While green jadeite is traditionally the most recognised, natural jadeite is available in many other beautiful colours, including lavender, yellow, reddish-orange, grey and almost colourless icy varieties.

When assessing colour, consider its:

Hue: The actual colour of the jadeite, such as green or lavender.

Saturation: How vivid or intense the colour appears.

Tone: How light or dark the colour is.

Distribution: Whether the colour is evenly distributed or concentrated in particular areas.

Highly saturated and evenly distributed colour is generally desirable. However, a piece does not need to have perfectly uniform colour to be beautiful. Natural colour variations, streaks and delicate green accents can give jadeite its individual character and make every piece one of a kind.

2. Translucency

Translucency describes how easily light passes through jadeite. It can range from opaque, where very little light enters the stone, to highly translucent, where light travels through the material and creates a luminous, glowing appearance. Fine jadeite is often prized for its high degree of translucency.

This quality is especially noticeable in icy jadeite. Fine icy jadeite, particularly glassy varieties, can be highly valued for its exceptional clarity and near-transparent appearance.

3. Texture or Graininess

Jadeite is composed of interlocking mineral crystals. The size and arrangement of these crystals determine its texture, sometimes described as its graininess.

Jadeite texture is generally classified as fine, medium or coarse. Fine-grained jadeite tends to have a smoother, more compact appearance and a soft glow, while coarse-grained jadeite may display more visible crystal structures or unevenness.

The finer the texture, the smoother and more refined the finished jadeite can appear. Fine-grained jadeite can also take a better polish, resulting in a brighter and more even surface lustre.

Zhongshui: Texture and Translucency

Zhongshui is a traditional jadeite term describing the combined effect of the stone’s internal texture and translucency.

Zhong refers to the fineness and compactness of the jadeite’s grain structure, while shui refers to the depth and ease with which light passes through the stone - in other words, its translucency.

Together, these qualities influence whether jadeite appears coarse and opaque or fine, luminous and “watery.” Jadeite with good zhongshui typically has a smooth-looking texture, greater translucency and a soft glow that appears to come from within the stone.

Although shui literally means “water,” it does not refer to actual moisture or water within the jadeite.

How the Three Factors Work Together

Colour, translucency and texture should not be evaluated entirely separately. Each factor influences how the others appear and contributes to the overall quality and beauty of the jadeite.

For example, a fine texture can allow light to pass through the jadeite more evenly, contributing to better translucency. Greater translucency can also make its colour appear brighter, deeper and more luminous. In contrast, a coarse texture may scatter light, causing the jadeite to appear cloudier or duller.

A highly translucent piece with delicate colour may therefore be more desirable than a strongly coloured piece with poor translucency and a coarse texture. Ultimately, the most beautiful jadeite achieves a pleasing balance among all three qualities.

Natural Beauty Is More Than Perfection

Jadeite is a natural gemstone, so variations in colour, texture and internal characteristics are expected. These features are not always flaws. They are part of the stone’s natural formation and give each piece its distinctive identity.

Beyond colour, translucency and texture, factors such as size, proportions, craftsmanship, cracks and treatments can also affect a jadeite piece’s quality and value.
