The gourd is believed to ward off evil as its first chinese character Hulu 葫芦 has the similar pronunciation to the word “protect” 护, as well as “blessing” 祜。The Chinese word for gourd 葫芦, also sounds similar to 福禄, which means luck and prosperity.
